About us

Advancing Justice, Dignity, Equality and Health

For more than three decades, UGANET has worked at the intersection of health, human rights, gender and access to justice, advancing social and legal protection for people and communities facing vulnerability, discrimination and exclusion.

Established in 1995 during Uganda’s HIV/AIDS crisis, UGANET began by confronting the stigma, discrimination and human rights violations experienced by people living with and affected by HIV. Over the years, our work has evolved in response to the changing realities, and intersectionalities around HIV facing communities—expanding to address gender-based violence, gender inequality, access to justice and broader health-rights concerns.

Today, UGANET works to address the interconnected legal, social and structural barriers that continue to leave people vulnerable to violence, discrimination, exclusion and unequal access to essential services. We recognize that health justice cannot be separated from human rights, gender equality and access to justice.

Our work brings together legal aid and community justice, violence prevention and gender equality, evidence-based advocacy and strategic litigation, and institutional strengthening to create change at both community and systems level.

We work alongside communities to strengthen knowledge, agency and access to justice; with survivors and vulnerable groups to connect them to appropriate support and protection; and with institutions, decision-makers and duty bearers to influence laws, policies and practices that affect people’s rights and wellbeing.
