Women in Uganda continue to have unequal claim to property when compared to men. A woman whose husband has died from AIDS is more likely to experience property grabbing and asset stripping which often leads to impoverishment.
High levels of HIV related stigma in communities and social cultural norms which deny women property rights in favor of men led us to realize that there is a correlation between HIV generated vulnerability, social stigma and abuse of women’s property rights.
At UGANET, we provide free legal aid, rights education, and mediation to defend women’s property rights. Since 2011, 40 percent of all cases handled have been related to property rights and succession planning and 80 percent of the victims were women and girls.
